Fibrates are used in the management of hyperlipidaemia, particularly raised triglycerides.Fibrates work through activating PPAR alpha receptors resulting in an increase in LPL activity reducing triglyceride levels.
Adverse effects:
- gastrointestinal side-effects are common
- increased risk of thromboembolism
