Livedo reticularis

Livedo reticularis

Livedo reticularis describes an purplish, non-blanching, reticulated rash caused by obstruction of the capillaries resulting in swollen venules.

Causes
  • idiopathic (most common)
  • polyarteritis nodosa
  • systemic lupus erythematosus
  • cryoglobulinaemia
  • antiphospholipid syndrome
  • Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome
  • homocystinuria

This image shows bilateral violaceous, reticular (net-like) discolouration over the posterior lower legs, consistent with livedo reticularis. The pattern suggests impaired dermal blood flow or vascular stasis. It may be physiological (cold-induced) or pathological—associated with vasculitis, antiphospholipid syndrome, Sneddon syndrome, or other systemic vasculopathies. Further evaluation is warranted.
